It might well be late at night, and almost every house in this shoddy little village might be dark, but a doctor must be used to late night rousing, and Henry was a man in need. He hammered the door again, hard enough this time to put dents in the painted wood. Every minute he spent standing out here was another moment in hell.
He'd forgotten how unbearable this kind of bone-grinding pain was. If he had remembered, he would never have raced that skittish gelding.
