Hello, and welcome back to the History of Egypt podcast, episode 240, Muneptar vs the Sea Peoples, and Odysseus, and the Hetites. In the summer of 1221 BCE, the banks of the Nile River were stained with blood. Corpses floated in waterways, weapons splattered with gore, lay amid reeds and rushes.
Across a battlefield in the Western Delta, Egyptian soldiers gathered corpses of their enemies. They hacked off limbs, stripped armour, and collected valuables. Nearby, piles of ash marked the smoking remains of a vast encampment.
Tents burned to the ground, trampled underfoot, and buried in the dust. Pharaoh's victorious arm, or neck at Aya, had smote their foe, a vast coalition of tribes from the western highlands.
