The Battle of the Denmark Strait opened with British fire directed at the wrong German ship before Bismarck and Prinz Eugen concentrated their guns on Hood. This episode follows Hood’s catastrophic destruction, Prince of Wales’s withdrawal, the damage inflicted on Bismarck, and Admiral Lütjens’s decision to abandon the commerce-raiding mission and make for France while the Royal Navy remained in pursuit. The range between the targets was less than 25,000 meters, about 16 miles, within the range where it was possible that the ships would be able to land hits on one another. On the British side, both the Hood and the Prince of Wales would first target the Prince Oigen, under the false belief that it was in fact the Bismarck that they were shooting
