- rise (no object) / raise (object) — I rise / I raise my hand
- lie (no object) / lay (object) — I lie down / I lay the book down
- sit (no object) / set (object) — I sit / I set the cup down
- fall (no object) / fell (object) — trees fall / loggers fell trees
请选择:(a) The sun ___ at six. (b) He ___ his hand. (c) I want to ___ down.
rise / rose / risen。The sun rises. Prices rose last year. Bread has risen.
raise / raised / raised。Raise your hand. They raised the price. She raised three children.
- The sun rises at six. — no object
- He raised his hand. — hand is the object
- Prices have risen sharply. — no object
- The shop has raised its prices. — prices is the object
- He raises at six every morning. — WRONG, no object present
raise 还有几个值得记的额外意思:raise a child、raise money、raise a question、raise your voice、raise awareness。
在美式英语里,a raise 还是个名词,意思是加薪:「I asked for a raise.」英式英语说 a rise:「I asked for a rise.」
lie / lay / lain。I lie down. The book lies on the table.
lay / laid / laid。Lay the book on the table. She laid the baby down.
LAY。「Yesterday I lay on the sofa」是正确的,而它用的正是另一个动词的现在式。
- I lie down every afternoon. — present, no object
- Yesterday I lay down. — past of lie, no object
- I have lain here for an hour. — participle of lie
- Lay the book down. — present of lay, with object
- She laid the book down. — past of lay, with object
- I laid down for a nap. — WRONG, no object; use lay
「I lay down for twenty minutes.」
- lie (recline) → lie / lay / lain / lying
- lay (place) → lay / laid / laid / laying
- lie (tell untruth) → lie / lied / lied / lying
- I lay on the beach yesterday. — past of lie, reclining
- I lay the towel on the sand. — present of lay, placing
- I lied about my age. — past of lie, untruth
- He is lying on the floor. — reclining
- He is lying to you. — telling untruths
那就是规则变化的 lie/lied。
sit / sat / sat。I sit down. The book sits on the shelf.
set / set / set。Set the cup down. She set the table.
- Please sit down. — no object
- Please set it down. — it is the object
- I sat there for an hour. — no object
- I set the alarm for six. — alarm is the object
- Sit the baby in the chair. — a real exception, see below
坐下」:「She sat the child on her lap.」
set 的义项多得反常——set the table、set an alarm、set a date、set a record、the sun sets——所有及物用法都如预期那样带宾语。
「The temperature dropped」没有宾语;「I dropped my phone」有宾语。
- wake / wake up — both ways: I woke up / I woke him up
- grow — both: plants grow / farmers grow wheat
- burn — both: the toast burned / I burned the toast
- hang / hung for objects, hanged for executions
- arise — formal, no object, means occur: a problem arose
rise/raise、lie/lay 和 sit/set 是语言更早阶段留下的遗存,那时这种区别被标记得更成体系。
- open — the door opened / I opened the door
- close — the shop closed / I closed the shop
- break — the glass broke / I broke the glass
- start — the film started / I started the film
- stop — the car stopped / I stopped the car
- move — the table moved / I moved the table
- change — things changed / I changed things
- increase — prices increased / they increased prices
「Prices increased」和「they increased prices」都成立。
因此,如果你在压力之下卡在 rise 和 raise 之间,increase、go up 和 put up 都是毫无风险的退路。
lie / lied / lied / lying。「He lied to me.」「She has lied about it before.」
- He lied about his age. — untruth
- He lay about the house all day. — reclined
- Don't lie to me. — untruth
- Don't lie on the wet grass. — recline
- She's lying. — ambiguous without context
大多数时候,介词就消除了歧义:lie TO someone 是说谎,lie ON something 是躺着。「He lied to me」和「he lay on the sofa」不可能混淆。
名词是 a lie,标准搭配是 to tell a lie——绝不要说 say a lie,这一点在 say/tell 的规则里讲过。「He told me a lie」是正确的。
Tip: lie to 和 lie on 值得当作固定搭配来记。
- rise / rose / risen — figures, prices, temperatures
- increase — safe alternative, takes both roles
- go up — informal, fine in speaking
- climb, soar, surge — stronger, for dramatic rises
- raise — only with an object: the government raised taxes
在 CELPIP 和雅思的口语中,lie 和 lay 会在描述日常作息和照片时出现:「He's lying on the beach」「She laid the papers on the desk」。

- 对于 lie 和 lay,背下一句就够:yesterday I lay down
东西是自己 rise 的——the sun rises、prices rise——而人或机构才 raises 某个东西:raise your hand、raise taxes、raise a child。
lie 正确的过去式是 lay:「Yesterday I lay down for a nap.」
所以「I lay on the beach」是躺,「I lied about it」是撒谎。
sit 不带宾语——you sit down、the book sits on the shelf。set 带宾语——set the cup down、set the alarm、set the table。 唯一常见的例外是让人坐下:「She sat the child on her lap」是标准说法。
