In Time 还是 On Time?
"At the end" 和 "in the end" 不是一回事,in time 和 on time 也不是。

In the end" 和 "at the end" 看着都完全合乎逻辑,可只有一个是你想说的意思。
2In time 和 on time
"The train arrived on time."
"I arrived in time to catch the train." 反义是 too late。
- The meeting started on time. — exactly at nine
- I got there in time for the meeting. — before it started
- He's never on time. — always late
- We arrived just in time. — barely made it
- Will the report be ready on time? — by the deadline
- Will the report be ready in time for the board? — before that event
注意 in time 通常指向一个目的——in time FOR 某事,in time TO 做某事。
Tip: 如果后面能加 "for" 或 "to",你要的是 in time。
3At the end 和 in the end
"At the end of the film"、"at the end of the street"、"at the end of the month"。
"We argued for hours, but in the end we agreed."
- At the end of the book, she dies. — the final pages
- In the end, I decided not to go. — after deliberating
- At the end of the day, I was exhausted. — literally, by evening
- At the end of the day, it's your choice. — an idiom meaning ultimately
- In the end of the film, she dies. — WRONG; use at
- At the end, I decided not to go. — WRONG for that meaning; use in
如果后面跟着 "of",用 AT the end of;如果后面什么都不跟,用 IN the end。
At the end of the day 有两条命。
At the end of + 名词;in the end + 逗号。
4At last、at least 和 lastly
"At last! I've been waiting an hour."
It costs at least fifty dollars." We lost, but at least we tried."
"Firstly… secondly… lastly…"
- At last, the bus arrived! — relief after waiting
- Finally, I would like to thank my family. — end of a list
- At least it stopped raining. — consolation
- It takes at least two hours. — minimum
- Lastly, remember to lock up. — final instruction
At last, I would like to conclude" 读起来像是你终于要写完了、松了口气。
5In the way 和 on the way
"Sorry, am I in the way?" "The car was in the way."
"I'm on the way." "Dinner is on the way."
- I'll pick it up on the way home. — en route
- Your table is in the way. — blocking
- The baby is on the way. — expected soon
- Am I in your way? — asking if you are blocking someone
- It's on my way. — it does not require a detour
By the way, did you call her?"
Tip: On my way
6At first 和 first of all
"At first I didn't like it, but now I love it."
"First of all, thank you for coming. Secondly…"
- At first it seemed difficult, then it got easier. — contrast
- First of all, let me explain the plan. — sequencing
- At first sight — an idiom, meaning on first impression
- First of all I made coffee, then I read the paper. — a sequence, no contrast
- At first I made coffee, then I read the paper. — odd; nothing changed
At first 几乎总是在铺垫一次反转,如果你的句子里没有反转,你要的是 first 或 first of all。
At the beginning of 是它在位置上的对应说法,和 at the end of 配成一对:"at the beginning of the film"。In the beginning 也存在,但偏文学或宗教味,所以日常写作用 at the beginning。
Tip: At first 预告着一个 but。
7In business 和 on business
- on business — travelling for work · in business — operating as a company
- in the end — finally · at the end of — position
- on the phone — using it · in the phone — inside the device
- on the team — a member · in the team — also used, British
- in hospital (British) · in the hospital (American) — as a patient
- on TV — broadcast · in the TV — inside the box
- at work — at your workplace · in work — employed, British
I'm here on business" 是说你为工作出差在此。"
当你是以某个机构的本来身份待在那里时,英式英语会去掉冠词:in hospital、at university、in prison。美式英语保留:in the hospital。
Tip: In hospital 和 in the hospital 是个好例子,说明有些事不值得纠结。
8时间介词:at、on、in
- at + clock time — at six o'clock, at midnight
- at + mealtimes — at lunch, at breakfast
- at + short festive periods — at Christmas, at the weekend (British)
- at night
- on + days — on Monday, on 3 June
- on + specific dates and named days — on my birthday, on Christmas Day
- on + day + part of day — on Monday morning
- on the weekend (American)
- in + months, seasons, years, centuries — in July, in winter, in 2026
- in + parts of the day — in the morning, in the evening
- in + a period ahead — in two hours, in a week
有两个例外值得标出来:at night 但 in the morning;以及跟 next、last、this、every 连用时根本不加介词——"I'll see you next Monday",绝不说 "on next Monday"。
See you next week" 是对的;加上 in 或 on 是常见错误,而且一听就出来。
- on purpose — deliberately; never in purpose
- by accident / by mistake — never on accident in British English
- in a hurry — never on a hurry
- on foot — never by foot
- by car, by bus, by train — but on foot
- in the rain, in the sun — never under the rain
- on holiday (British) / on vacation (American)
- at home, at work, at school — no article
- in the middle of — never at the middle of
- on the whole — meaning generally
- in fact, in general, in particular
- at the moment, for the moment
英语用的是 in:"We stood in the rain."
中文母语者常见的一例是 "arrive to",直接从“到达”搬过来——英语说的是 arrive at 或 arrive in。
- Under the rain — from languages that use under; English says in
- By foot — from the by-transport pattern; English says on foot
- In the end of the film — merging the two end phrases; English says at
- On the morning — from on for days; English says in the morning
- In Monday — from in for time periods; English says on Monday

你需要的是把 at the end of 和 in the end 存成两个独立的词条,各配一个句子。
这些短语常见得惊人——in the end、on the way、by the way、at least 几乎每段对话里都会出现。
- 把容易混的成对短语放在一起——in time 和 on time,不要分开存
The train arrived on time." I arrived in time to catch the train."
We argued for hours, but in the end we agreed." At the end 表示位置,而且几乎总要跟 of:"at the end of the film"、"at the end of the street"。机械的判断标准是:后面跟着 of 就用 at the end of;后面什么都不跟就用 in the end。
英语用 in:"We stood in the rain." in the sun 也是同理。
On foot。其他每一种交通方式都用 by——by car、by bus、by train、by plane——正因如此 by foot 才显得那么合理。
See you next Monday"、"I saw her last week"、"every Tuesday"。
