In the middle of a Tuesday class, Frank's heart stops cooperating. Lina takes charge until the ambulance comes. The next day, from his hospital bed, Frank asks Grace to teach the class. Grace has two choices, and she has to explain hers to the one person who wants Frank to stop worrying about anyone: his wife. Seven forty
It happened at seven forty, in the middle of a sentence.
Frank was standing at the chalkboard explaining the difference between "I'm used to" and "I used to," which he said was the most dangerous pair of words in the English language. He wrote USED TO on the board. Then the chalk stopped moving.
He put one hand on the board, as if to hold it up. With the other, he touched his left arm.
"Frank?" said Grace.
"Give me a second," said Frank. His voice was very quiet. His forehead was wet. "I'm just…"
He didn't finish. He sat down on the floor, slowly, with his back against the onion sacks, and his face was the colour of the chalk.
